The theme in this series of lithographies (handpainted) is some kind of a travel story from Africa mixed with influences from other places, other realities and times.

Writing in Februar 2009.
I came home 30. september from a very inspiring stay in Mozambique and S-Africa into a strange situation in Iceland. I had with me lot of photos and sketches and a need to work things out in my paintings. But after this trip maybe still closer to something I find important to handle and think about. As from earlier travels fascinated from a rythm of life I find in Africa.
In this absurd situation in Iceland now facing the economical corrumption here (of a certain groop of people) still worse than could be expected I found though my way in the drawings.
There I was with one foot in Africa and the other here in Iceland and everything connected with something old and even also with my old works, with themes about values and of course the struggle of humans living with the same elements in one world.
What is coming out of these drawings is still a question for me but they are anyway my way of thinking.

Artist statement - In spite of the sunshine

In spite of the sunshine and the smiles of the children, men dropped bombs.

About studies and themes of works:

I studied in art academies in France and Sweden and have both
studied and worked on various trips to India, Mexico, Greece, Spain, USA, France,
Uganda, Benin and several other places. Some of these working trips have been of great importance for the development of my work.

I work with paintings, lithographies, drawings, and murals in concrete or with other materials in a manner that would be called expressive-abstract. My work has often reminded people of the Icelandic nature but I know that even if its roots are in the Westman Islands with the rocky shores and the struggle with the Atlantic Ocean all around and the brushstrokes are somehow influenced by that, the different aspects of life with the variety of human culture and nature and the life and struggle of life in other corners of the Earth is also among its sources.

The wonders of creation, the restlessness, the power, and the struggle in nature and the interactions between man and nature are among the things I find myself compelled to depict. In fact, my work is no less a universal metaphor for human life on Earth.
Travels to distant corners of the world have had a great impact on me and served as reminders of how opposites in nature and culture belong, after all, to the same natural laws that hold everywhere on Earth. We are in fact all parts of the same creation which we ought to respect.

The paintings I am working on now are much influenced by my travels in recent years, such as to Mexico, Lebanon and Africa. Things happening in this world which can be so beautiful are constantly pressing on my mind.

The mixture of being like and unlike is an important component in all relations between humans, such as when enjoying culture and art, and in feeling friendship and love.

How have we humans come to divide humans on Earth into “we” and “other” and not respecting the rights of others?

Tvær sýningar Jóhönnu Bogadóttur á Siglufirði

„Á vegum hafsins“ er heiti sýninga sem Jóhanna Bogadóttir opnar nú á fimmtudaginn 3. júlí. Önnur verður opnuð í Gallerí Gránu Síldarminjasafninu klukkan 17:00 og hin í Ráðhússalnum kl. 18:00.Allir íbúar Fjallabyggðar og gestir eru velkomnir. Þarna verða málverk, grafík og teikningar sem falla að þema um hafið og lífsbaráttuna en það hefur löngum verið mikilvægt í verkum Jóhönnu. Þar eru hughrifin bæði sprottin úr uppruna og uppvexti í Vestmannaeyjum og á Siglufirði og frá ferðum á framandi slóðir. Átökin við náttúruöflin geta einnig verið myndlíking fyrir lífsbaráttu mannsins hvar sem er. Hughrif utan úr heimi, frá suðrinu eru líka þáttur í þessari sýningu. Hluti verkanna er unninn úr skissum frá vesturströnd Afríku, frá vinnustofudvöl á ströndinni í Benin þar sem róið er til fiskjar á opnum bátum frá brimsorfinni hafnlausri strönd. Einnig frá skoðunarferðum í byggð á staurum úti í vatni sem minna óneitanlega á staurabyggð síldarplananna. Eitthvað verður af ljósmyndum til að sýna tengslin. Jóhanna hefur sýnt víða um heim og hafa verk eftir hana verið keypt á söfn og stofnanir ýmissa landa. Hún hefur sýnt áður á Siglufirði um fimm sinnum og dvaldi þar oft sumarlangt á bernsku og æskuárum og kynntist síldaræfintýrinu af eigin raun.Sýningarnar standa til 4, ágúst og sú á Gránulofti Síldarminjasafnsins er opin á opnunartíma safnsins en sú í Ráðhúsinu alla daga frá kl. 16:00 til 18:00.
